Trade 1: sent Raffi Torres to Columbus for centre Gilbert Brule

Trade 2: sent Jonni Pitkanen to Carolina for winger Erik Cole

Great news for Oilers fans because when trading they usually come out for worse. Torres is vastly overrated while Brule has potential and is only 21. Don't see why Columbus would give up on him.

When they added Visnovsky, Pitkanen was as good as gone. They dumped salary and added a forward who will help. Pitkanen helps Carolina as they need blue line help.

Oilers will be in the race for the west this season. You add this talent to Gagner,Hemsky et al.... and this team is a playoff team.

The Pitkanen trade will work great for both teams. Pitkanen is back in the east where defensemen get involved in offense more, and The Oilers get a good forward

See although the Oilers have a good young team, I am still not convinced myself that Edmonton will do anything in the West. To me I see a team with a few improvements, but still not a playoff contender.

Sure will be entertaining to watch though.

Minus Horcoff and Souray for huge portions of the season and they didn't miss the playoffs by very much. You have those two healthy, along with the addittions they've made.No way they miss the playoffs.

Roloson is also on board with having a lighter workload, so there won't be a goaltending controversy either.

Eberle their first round pick is going to have a shot at making the team as well. This kid is a sniper in the mold of a Bossy. He proves he can play at the NHL level and sorry but you've got a team that can score on 3 lines.Plus an improving set of D-Men.

Edmonton's young guns stepped up last year and with this year's additions (Cole, Visnosky) I dont see them missing playoffs, even in tough West. They only missed playoffs last year by 3 points. Also I cant beleive Columbus just gave up on Brule, he's only 21... The kid's got talent, just needs an opportunity (less than 10 minutes of ice time last year)...

I don't think Horcoff has the ceiling that most people believe he could have but the fact of the matter is he's the leader of that squad and they absolutely need him, so the signing was great.

The Pitkanen trade was a win-win for both teams... I'm sure Pitkanen is thrilled to go to Carolina.

Although young, they still have a chance to sneak into the back end of the playoffs in a deep west, but it depends on how much their future-star kids improve this year. Their top line will produce well (Horcoff-Hemsky-Cole probably), although not nearly as much as the super-star lines of the west (Datsyuk's line, Thornton's, Getzlaf's etc.). Gagner needs his #2 line to produce at a high level to make them contenders, they can't all hover in the 40-50 point range again.

Also, remember that the Blackhawks are entering the fray at the playoff bubble.
