Welcome to THE UPPER MANAGEMENT. Fantasy Sports Neighborhood.
You are currently viewing the UM as a guest, which gives you limited access to view most discussions and access our other features.
The UM opened August 17th, 2007 as a handpicked 100 members who were asked to join for their smarts and community involvement. But the word got out that the UM neighborhood is not just your average start up community! .... Members begun jumping in from word of mouth .. and now the UM stands at 300+ members and over 30,000 posts and growing!
The site has it's very own Texas Holdem table which has members playing against each other 24/7! .. MLB Gameday audio only for the community. A live chat room, fantasy leagues with the winner landing up to 100 dollars in prizes. We also have our own FREE Baseball draft kit for our UM members, as well as an upcomming Football draft kit. We run our own monthly MILB prospect list. But most importantly .. The UM has grown into a community of sports friends. So jump in and, join the UM today! |

 |
|
KHL is a newly created Russian Hockey League. It stands for Continental Hockey League (or Kontinental in Russian). This league replaces the old RSL (Russian Super League). Now with NHL being the best hockey league in the world you don't expect KHL to pose much threath ... HOWEVER.
Here are 2 reasons why it could:
1. Main reason is that this league pays almost as well as NHL. The difference here is that young players in NHL play for almost minimums - Malkin is earning something like 2 mill per year. 2009 prospect class is loaded and 1 Russian prospect (Andrei Kuchin) is projected to go top 5 - despite all the risks that involve Russian players. He is beleived to be more talented than the top Russian in 08 draft (Filatov). The problem here is that Kuchin may not even go to NHL simply because he can get paid big bucks playing back kome in Russia in the new league. Why play for bare minimum when you can earn 8-10 mill a year - in his case.
2. It's also been reported that following season they are expected to expand. They've invited 2 teams from Sweden ao they could steal prospects from Sweden , Norway, Finland as well as from countries like Slovakia etc.
Highly unlikely but it's possible that this new league could pose some threath to NHL simply by stealing international players right under their noses. Agree / disagree?

One slight positive, initially at least, might be that it will open the door for more players to enter the pro ranks,,,
(admittedly, I haven't read the entire rule status for players)
Hockey is easily the most popular sport in my "world" here in Maine, and this, in my opinion opens up opportunity for alot of talented college guys who may not otherwise get a chance once they graduate,,,
Time will tell, indeed, but any time there is the opportunity to expand a sport that has limited popularity across the globe, one has to believe it will be beneficial in the end,,,
-to me, if the league is able to achieve genuine success it will only help expand the reach of the sport; increased competition is better for the youth in the sport; financial bartering is good for the players;

| I think this could hurt the Russian influx of players comming into the NHL. Why go half way around the world to make little the first few years, when you can play in from of your comrads for allot of money. But the NHL has that aura of playing against the best .... That won't change and that's what also drives these competitive athletes ... It's why rich Japanese players come to play Major League Baseball.

Yeah but it would also 'water down' NHL...

Agree ... It should definitely help the expansion of the sport, if done correctly. Poaching each other's players or behind the scenes stoushes can only hurt it though.
Sergei Fedorov was quoted saying that had KHL was there in 1991 he would never go over to NHL. The link below is in Russian however...

"Listen up kids." I'm Don Cherry and if those Ruskies wanna have their own league, let em.All the candy-asses can go back home and we can have real good Canadian boys in the NHL,where they should be."
Anythink those Russians do won't hurt the greatest league in the world. It'll be great....pause to shove Ron McLean away. It'll be great if all the sweetheart Swedes left too."
