Poon, great article. I was talking with my father yesterday, and we were saying how if anyone besides the Red Sox is gonna win the AL East, we'd rather it be the Rays then the Yanks. Honestly, the Rays have a solid team this year, and the fact that they never really have been good just makes this story better. I think the Rays are almost a lock for a playoff berth this season, its wheter or not they win the AL East is the question

Wow-

Great article Poon-

Welcome to the world of Bosox fans!

Seriously- the tear jerking commentary you put forth is bonafide and legit,,,

However- as a Bosox fan watching the Rays roll all over the Sox like a stream train over wet tar I can't help but try to find some reason that their Cinderella season won't last,,

First off, the fan base has no idea how to respond- and this lack of concern will bounce off the field and into the heart and soul of the players,,,

Second- the Rays still have to contend with the resurgent Yankees and Tigers and will likely be hard pressed to even make the Wildcard slot,,,

The numbers don't lie, and experience generally shines through in the end,,,

While my money is on them missing the boat this season, I have to agree this is a genuine step in the right direction for a franchise that has been on the verge of folding for some time now,,,

Nonetheless- I think the Rays will press the usual powerhouses of the AL and we will likely see a ton of desperation on both sides of the fence,,,

Strangely enough- for those that are fantasy baseball buffs, this means we will see the Yanks, Rays, and Sox call up every available prospect in their fight to the finish,,,

Remember this Poon, as a Sox fan I understand pain, I realize misfortune,,,

The vision of Buckners groundball and Bob Stanleys wild pitch is etched in my memory forever ,,,,Nevermind Bucky Dents homer in '78,,,

On paper I like the Rays, but as a lifelong Sox fan, I can't in good conscious give them the nod in 2008,,,

Better luck next year!

Very good read Pooner. I'm a die hard Yankees fan but man am I glad to see Rays doing well - don't see how anyone can hate bunch of young guys playing hard on nightly basis and reaping the awards...

Couple Notes from recent Rays games:

1. they swept Red Sox TWICE this season - first time that happened to Sox in a very long time.
2. on the season they also swept 2 division leaders AT THE TIME - Marlins and Cubs -
3. currently the best record in Majors and with AL dominating NL (AS Games) Rays could possibly be looking for home field advantage throughout the playoffs. I know it's early and dont want to jinx them but this is why they could be very dangerous...

Home record: 34-13
They are 18-5 at home since May 22
16-10 in 1-run games this season - best in majors

Thanks for all the feedback you guys. If anyone has anything else to add, positive or negative, please feel free.

I'll try to write at least an article a month about a topic that isn't talked about too much but is still interesting... instead of the mindless unsuppprted opinionated babble from most bloggers and the relentless big market pandering from most professional sports writers.

what a fantastic read poon! It was seriously enjoyable as an editorial on espn.com. I wonder if we can submit this in some sort of virtual online story/blog writing contest lol

another reason why I think yankee fans might 'hate' Rays fans is for 2 things....

1) that big fight they got into earlier in the year when Johnny 'WWE' Gomes came from out of nowhere to give the peoples elbow lol

2) the fact that the Rays, despite being terrible over the years, seem to have the Yanks number lol

again, very enjoyable to read!
