The former Raider great succumbed to pancreatic cancer at age 63.

After his stellar career on the field from 1967-1981 (7 Pro Bowls) Upshaw became the Director of the NFLPA and went through many turbulent times. He will be remembered for a lifetime of service to the game which he loved. Some will say he sold out the players, others will say without him the NFL wouldn't have become to strongest professional sports league in the world.

Speculation is former DB Troy Vincent could succeed Upshaw at the NFLPA.

Sympathies to his friends and family, including his son Chad a reserve TE for the Panthers.

he was able to get the players closer to the money they deserved putting their bodies on the line like they do...as opposed to the prima donna baseball players.

It's not only todays players benefitting either.Although he needed a serious cattle prod from guys like Ditka, Upshaw went to the league and arranged a better deal for the older retired players who never saw any of todays big money.
