Edited to reflect my idiocy of even commenting on Quentin as a "Rookie" in the first place-
(Grid owes me one of his infamous lollipop booby prizes for being an inept magoo) _________________

Wow,,,no doubt-
If I had a vote as of today, I'd go with Quentin followed by Ellsbury , and then Longoria,,,
However- I get the feeling Quentin might end up getting shafted because of the fanfare that surrounds the Bosox and the Cinderella story in Tampa this season,,,,
(Of course, it is June 27th, and for all we know our AL ROTY may still be in hiding) |
Out of nowhere, this is a very interesting AL race. Ellsbury's runs and SB's really stand out ... but then again, the power numbers by longoria and Quentin are rather impressive ... especialy Longoria who started May 1st.

Quentin isn't a rookie, ya mooks.
The race between Longoria and Ellsbury could be epic though. A month ago Ellsbury was the clear cut winner in the AL but he has slown down a little and Longoria is raking. .350+ OBP at midseason for a rookie who leads off is pretty impressive though, especially if you compare him to a worthless turd like Gomez over in Minnesota - Ellsbury still has my vote for the time being.

If voters were voting as of today, Ellsbury wins in a landslide.
Come season's end, I say he wins but by a smaller margin. Longoria's got great power, but he's been VERY streaky and strikes out a lot, often with men on base.
As for Ellsbury, he's basically running away with the MAJORS lead in SB, on pace to set the rookie record, and is scoring as often as anyone else. He's also shown considerably more power than many expected.
They've both played outstanding defense.
Personally, this is a no brainer for me.

Since I think Elsbury is the best lead-off man in baseball today (an opinion widely criticized here in the UM), this is a n0-brainer for me also.

I would vote ellsbury as well ... but I think it's alot closer of a race then that UO .... Longeria came up in May .. add 30 days to his totals and he would be on pace for a 40HR, 120RBI season. His numbers for 2 months work is rather impressive.

I'd actually be tempted to agree with that statement.
I consider him along the lines of Soriano, Reyes, and Rollins, considering he's not even CLOSE to his prime.
For me though, Han-Ram is THE best as a leadoff (when he does). No question. His own tier.
Ellsbury's in the next one though.

Wow hang on ...
I'm going with Ellsbury as well but this isn't a landslide. Longoria is on pace for 80 runs, 30 HRs and 95 ribbies. He also missed something like first 2-3 weeks of the season. His numbers are very similar to Ryan Braun last year... Ellsbury by the slighest of the margins.

I wouldn't go so far as to call Longoria a Ryan Braun. I do love him Longoria, I own him in 2/4 leagues and had him up until very recently in the 3rd.
Take Longoria's numbers and play them over the rest of the year, he hits .272 over 152 games with 33 HR, very good numbers.
But Braun? In 113 games, he had 34 HR, with an average 52 points higher. Braun didn't just play well last year, he was the BEST slugger in baseball. Literally.
He fell 20 ABs or so short of qualifying. You can make him 0-21 (or w/e the number was) over those next 21 at bats, and he leads the majors in SLG% anyway last year.
Obviously Longoria has a very nice future ahead of him. But when you look at the figures, Ellsbury has been the uncontested best base stealer and up to this point this year alone, best lead off man in ALL of baseball. While Longoria has been good, he hasn't by any standards been the best at what he does.
Longoria has also been VERY, VERY streaky. .200 for two weeks, .290 the next two, 1 HR in two weeks, 5 HR in the next two, over and over. He has not been a player who comes up to the plate and you expect a consistent performance from.
Ellsbury has been. Year round he's been producing at the same high level. Being able to consistently produce and be a factor gives Ellsbury an edge IMO.

Rookies are so streaky (yes, Ellsbury will have a slump spanning at least a few weeks at some point in the season...) that it is way too early to think about ROYs.
And then you have to take into account the "popularity" of the players, since there is always serious voter bias... yes the BBWAA is biased. For example, NY Times and LA Times writers aren't allowed to vote, but all the Boston located writers can. Also, there are obviously more voters from the bigger market team's areas than places like Tampa and KC (Angel Berroa over Hideki Matsui in '03 was because of other reasons...). Before the LA Times writers were prohibited from voting, the LA Dodgers had 5 NL ROYs in a row (Karros, Piazza, Mondesi, Nomo, Hollandsworth)... deservedly or not, 5 in a row is disturbing.
But of course the writers aren't total blind homers, so obviously if there is an overwhelming winner, which there usually is, they will make the right choice. However, in a close race you gotta take the voters into account.
Since its a crapshoot to try and predict a specific ROY right now, I'll just throw a bunch of names out there that should be taken into consideration with Longoria and Ellsbury in the AL.
Joba Chamberlain
Aaron Laffey
Armando Galarraga
Hell, the eventual ROY might not even be in the majors right now.
... and then add a little + to Joba and Jacoby's vote numbers because of the teams they play on.
And to make BP happy, how about Chris Davis for AL ROY!!!! _________________

If you really want to make him really happy, make it Davis for the AL, Bruce for the NL & then sign him up for a three way (& let Cueto watch).
