If you take Ellsbury and look at how he's played this year, you can make the argument that he's been one of the top couple fielders at his position. You can't make the same argument when talking about Longoria.

Didn't I just say he has like the 5th fewest errors among regular 3Bs? He's got four people ahead of him in Fielding%: Rolen, Glaus, Feliz, and Lowell. Only Glaus has played in more games, so his coming up late is not important. He's been a top 5 third baseman, no matter what stat you want to use. And Darko's right about his arm, he only has 3 assists, whereas Longoria has a great arm for a third baseman.

Only three assists? The other two center fielders who have 0 errors have three assists as well (Hunter and McLouth), and of the five center fielders with one error, they have 3,5,4,5 and one assist. Also, McLouth has started 7 more games than Ellsbury, and Hunter 12 more. So, three assists, like a .332 OBP, is not at all a bad statistic. Look at ANY one of the best center fielders this year, and none have more than five, and the other two with 0 errors in fact have the same amount of assists.

Second, the chart you're using for errors/fielding percentage only uses 24 third basemen. In addition, just using Longoria and those other 23, he happens to 14/24 in Range Factor and 11/24 in Zone Rating, so actually, he doesn't rank top five w/e stats you use, especially considering those are the two most accepted, accurate, and used fielding stats after fielding %.

Longoria has 87 SOs and 88 Hits. He's not going to post a .270 average or more than 30 homers when it's all said and done.

I just realized why this thread is so long......

It involves a Red Sox.

Looks like even with his injury, Longoria has this thing wrapped up now.

If Longoria's out for too long don't rule out Alexei Ramirez.

Near .310 average with 13 HR and 9 SB right now.

If he can finish at over .310 with 15/15 he's a contender.

Come on dude. Longoria wipes the floor with Ramirez. 9 stolen bases in 17 attempts is pathetic. The 9 swipes are not an asset but a liability. Longoria gets on base at a better clip, hits for much more power & is a much, much better defender.

I didn't say I think he deserves it.

I'm just saying he WILL be a contender if he finishes with those stats, not that I agree. There will be people who vote for him.

Personally I'd vote for Longoria.

Exactly! 7-7 vs 9-17. Let's even assume that Ramirez can steal 6 of his next 6. 15-23 or 7-7? I'll take 7-7 any day of the week. His seven would be far more valuable than 15 of 23. He'd have to steal something like 30 bases to make up for the negative run value of his caught stealings.

Again, I'm not saying that Ramirez DESERVES it.

I'm just saying he WILL get votes.

ehh this was a no-brainer really. Ramirez and Ellsbury had good season but Longoria was in class of his own.
