Even though Burnett has stated he may not opt out of his contract at seasons end, one would believe after his great season so far, he will be doing just that.
Last night's line
8.0 IP 5 Hits 1 Run 1 W and 13 K's.
At home he has won 8 straight starts and is going to start getting mentioned in the Cy Young race by some. His ERA should void any chance of that but still he has finally become what so many thought was possible. With their recent success there is a rumor the Jays will be willing to increase their payroll by as much as 15 to 20 million next season, giving them a chance to keep Burnett, and signing the home run hitter that lineup desperately needs.

his ERA is awful and will nver won cy young, but his performance this year and shocking durability will def net him a huge contract in todays world where the Meche's and Silvas get 40+ mil _________________

The little that Burnett has said on next year though keeps me thinking that if the Jays get a hitter or two he would love to stay right there.Deep rotation and one of the best bullpens in the league. You have to figure with a 1st basemen that has power, the Jays could easily see their run production be at a decent level.
The whole off-season though will hinge on what is happening with Aaron Hill.If his post-concussion syndrome doesn't get better, the Jays will be forced to go after a SS with power instead of keeping MacDonald, no matter how great his defense is.

Hey Cranky, Their is about a 1% chance that Burnett stays with Toronto. Up until this last month he has stated on more then 1 accasion that he's not returning. It started last season when he had a falling out with Gibbons (Who didnt?) and it lingered on this year when he and Richardi had a falling out. Richardi said on CBC that he would trade AJ in a min if the right deal came about, AJ didnt like that.
As usual, these bums find the fortune of health on there walk years and do enough to leave with a healthy new contract somewhere. The only way I can see him staying is if Toronto somehow makes the playoffs ... I don't see that happening either.

His recent comments regarding opting out went against what had been speculated.Burnett said he had not decided at all whether to opt out.I'll take him at his word. He's also a huge fan of Gaston and the way he treats players.10-2 since Cito took over.As well Arnsberg is his guy as far as pitching coaches go, having been with him in Florida and Toronto.
We'll have to wait and see, but if the Jays can address the hitting situation, they have a shot at keeping Burnett. Not saying it's a huge one,but there is that shot.
